Transitional Places (Moving From, Moving Towards) Ali Bramwell
16 April 2002 - 27 April 2002
"I don't want to frighten people, I think fear makes us react badly, I just want to make your skin prickle... like when all your hairs stand on end." - Ali Bramwell
In this body of work, Ali Bramwell has predominantly used steel to construct a reaction. The industrial character of the metal is at times softened by the fires of the forge, or altered by the addition of chrome electroplating. Barbed wire also features, Bramwell believing that it has an already ambiguous character for most New Zealanders - recalling quiet farm scenes or images of violence. The exhibition is the culmination of Bramwell's MFA project, and will soon be embarking on a trip to South Korea to participate in the International Environment Art Symposium.
