Uninvited Carmel Cosgrove

Melbourne based artist Carmel Cosgrove grapples with issues of private and displaced spaces in her multi media installation Uninvited. Utilising the playful nature of the handheld camera, Cosgrove's work places the viewer as an uneasy but willing voyeur. Just as a neighbour may peek and spy over the back fence, Uninvited reflects on our compulsive observational instincts. Cosgrove explains,

Uninvited portrays an awareness of death through human sensibility, by revealing sensations and responses in a very private ceremony. This intrusion into the ritual of private bereavement makes for uncomfortable viewing, feeling you shouldn’t be watching. But humans are obsessive watchers, we can’t help ourselves. We continue to watch the unfolding of a silent ritual, even though we are an uninvited observer.
