Ian Balch, Del suo fratello, 2004

Del suo fratello Ian Balch

9 March 2004 - 27 March 2004

In the West Side space, Ian Balch's Del suo fratello is a two part project, a sound work and double video work. It is presented in the gallery as both a document of a process work, that is inextricably about the senses and affect, and also a beautiful sumptuous and mysterious experience in and of itself. The project is based on the work Capriccio sopra la lontananza del fratello dilettissimo (in six parts) by JS Bach. The title of Cappriccio is connected to the depature of Johann Jacob (Bach's brother). Balch interpreted the six sections of the original score as specific materials that were intended to speak to the emotional tenor of the story n the music.

Each of the mateirals chosen were used to construct sound boxes that were then 'played' by harpsichord expert Laurina Sableviciute. The resulting sound was recorded and will be heard in the gallery. The video imagery used is focussed entirely on the musicians hands performing the work as framed lushly by the materials chosen; glass, bronze and smoked perspex, salt on graphite, water, steel and drumskin.

Baclh is an experienced artist who has exhibited in Chicago, Brussels, Barcelona as well as comprehensively throughout Scotland. Dunedin has met him before during his residency through Artist at Work at the Dunedin School of Art in 2003.
