Edwina Stevens, Media Povera

Media Povera Curated by Sally Ann McIntyre

12 July 2010 - 7 August 2010

Providing its own eclectic take on the “media formerly known as new”, Media Povera groups together artists based in New Zealand, Greece, Australia and the USA: Brett Ian Balogh, Radio Cegeste, Ryan Cockburn, Edie Stevens, Helga Fassonaki, Alexander MacKinnon. Media Povera groups together artistic strategies emerging from hybrid investigations in the contemporary, audio, media and transmission arts, together these works foreground the materiality of the media object in the age of digital immateriality, while remaining mindful of its agency within systems of production and distribution, as Sarah Cook and Beryl Graham have identified in their book Rethinking Curating: Art after New Media media are best understood not as materials but as 'behaviours' – participatory, performative or generative.

Blue Oyster Discussion Session 12: Tuesday 27 July, 5:30pm

For this discussion we have invited Simon Kaan, Antony Deaker and Rihari Taratoa-Bannister to consider the possibilities for contemporary Maori art spaces as living spaces; asking how have they worked, how do they work and how can they work, while drawing on recent projects like Te Ngaru Hou (Fringe Festival) and Oi (Matariki Festival).
