Inside The Fish Tank, The Exquisite Crone Phoebe Mackenzie

Inside The Fish Tank, The Exquisite Crone is a new work by Phoebe Lysbeth Kay Mackenzie, situated in the window of Blue Oyster Art Project Space over the summer of 2017/2018.

Mackenzie’s constructed portrait of an intriguing figure stares out defiantly from the window, surveying Dowling Street with no movement but the authoritative snap of its fingers. Their pensive expression of ease and self-assuredness rests within their pose, reminiscent of classical portraiture.

Ōtepoti-based interdisciplinary artist and independent film-maker, Phoebe Mackenzie holds a BVA from Dunedin School of Arts and a Diploma in Film and Television from Aoraki Polytechnic and works between film and photography, often in collaboration, through videos, installations and live projections. For the last three months, Mackenzie has been Blue Oyster’s studio resident, exploring her ongoing fixation with constructed identity and alternative realities. Recent exhibitions and projects include: ACTIONS & REACTIONS, a collaborative performance and installation with Tess Mackay and Emilie Smith as part of Storm Channels, YYY, Dunedin (2017), Fishing For Friends, a short film festival presented by Baby Steps, Melbourne (2017), Skin curated by Kelly O’Shea as part of 'The GIF Project', DIRT (2017); Alive In Berlin with Jenny Powell (2017) and The Odeon—Drive in Cinema with Emily Berryman & Ted Black both part of Dunedin Fringe Festival (2017).
