Merge Nodes
Joe Hamilton

Joe Hamilton makes use of technology and found materials to create intricate and complex compositions online, offline and in between. The term ‘merge nodes’ refers to the collapsing of multiple geographical locations into one frame. ‘Merge node’ is also the name of a tool used to merge two digital image or video files. While Hamilton’s sculptural work Diffusion Layer sits in an ‘offline’ space, his looping film Merge Nodes in the second space is very much ‘online’, extending on a series of film works including Regular Division (2014), Stream (2014), Survey (2013) and Hypergeography (2011). These films will be shown at the film screening on Thursday 19 February, 6pm.

Based in Melbourne, Joe Hamilton holds an MFA from RMIT (2011). Recent projects include: Indirect Flights (Solo Exhibition), Fort Delta, Melbourne, 2014; Penetrating Surfaces, The Austrian Film Museum, Vienna, 2014; Rooftop Transmissions, Melbourne Now, 2014; Act Natural, Galerie Eva Meyer, Paris, 2015; Possibilities and Choices – Mixer, Istanbul, 2015.

Piti Montessori
Sorawit Songsataya

Piti, ปิติ — Thai for ‘joy’

Sorawit Songsataya pays attention to objects and images that act as educational modules for his fictional Montessori school. Animated characters and narrative elements pervade each pedagogical component in such a way as to imply a learning environment in which the subjects taught and methods of teaching are erratic. Both within and beyond the pedagogical environment, objects and images, whilst generated and shared by individuals as sentimental or promotional motifs, run the associated risk of non-tacit use, storage and dissemination—they leak beyond bounded intention. With this expanded life, gestures of sentimentality and promotion seep into new terrains of pirated productivity, frequently circulating unwittingly beyond ‘home’. A selection of Songsataya’s films will also be screening on Thursday 19 February, 6pm.

Sorawit Songsataya holds an MFA from the University of Auckland (2014). Recent group exhibitions include: Unstuck in Time, Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts, 2014; Black Market, Window Online, 2014; Everyday Backwash, Michael Lett, 2014; Campaign Furniture, Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 2014; Weeping Touchstone (with Dan Nash), Gloria Knight, 2013.
