Who Opens the Door Annie Mackenzie and Dave Marshall

A rind, a cloth, chain, a stone, water...

Since graduating from Ilam School of Fine Arts in 2009 and 2010, Annie Mackenzie and Dave Marshall have both enjoyed emerging practices that often involve project-based installations and performances. Coming from a materials-focused sculpture department into a contemporary art focused world; the notion of ‘sculpture’ for an emerging artist is often more about working against object-based processes and materials, in order to develop the quality and depth of a practice.

Conventions of the contemporary world combined with an extensive journey around South East Asia as well as living in Nelson, Christchurch and Wellington in the past four years, Mackenzie and Marshall have developed a collaborative practice that is often drawn from their surroundings – collecting material objects, scenery, stories and traditions that specifically exist within culturally movable lifestyles. Who Opens the Door returns to Mackenzie and Marshall’s backgrounds in textiles and ceramics, informed by their many temporary homes, portable collections and environments.

Based in Wellington, Annie Mackenzie holds a BFA in sculpture from the University of Canterbury. Based in Wellington, Dave Marshall holds a BFA in sculpture from the University of Canterbury.
